Celebrating new life with an in home Boudoir Photoshoot

Boho Boudoir AJBC Photography

New place, new plans, new woman.

Shelby is a beautiful, powerful, driven, talented woman. It was about time in her life that she finally celebrated that, celebrated herself!
Shelby described her life as of late like being held underwater, not being able to breath for years, and now finally being able to come up for air! Close your eyes and imagine that… pressure on your chest, fear of your surroundings, hope gone, and then out of nowhere someone pulls you to the service and that breath of air that fills your lungs feels like unlike anything you’ve ever felt before. It’s a shockingly, well deserved, humbling emotion. Instantly you know you’re alive and going to be ok. And then you freak out all over again- OH MY GOD- I’m ALIVE!

Boom. Enter Shelby’s current mindset- time to celebrate YOU girl!

That’s what we wanted to show off here- the celebration of freedom, fresh air, living fully. She also just moved into a brand new loft downtown which was a big step for her, so doing it at her place felt empowering for the shoot.

It’s obvious, Shelby could wear anything, pose anyway, and it’s what Pinterest Dream Boards are made of…. but you can see for yourself below….

And total side note- Shelby is a Hair Stylist Rock Star. She’s kicking ass with her clients and in her industry at a very young age… so if you want to book with her before she only works with celebrities you can find her at Studio 710 in Port Huron.

Boldly breaking out of her shell with Boudoir

Edgy Boudoir Photoshoot
proves this shy girl has a lot to say.

boudoir fashion.jpg

Let me start out by saying I am not a liar. Just remember that as I tell you these things and you see these images.
Ok, so Coty tells me that she’s shy, her friends think of her as the reserved one of the bunch, and she’s not really about showing off her body or getting all done up.
Now stop, I told you I wasn’t a liar. And I don’t think Coty is either, so... pick your jaw up off the floor as you look through these in your face, hot, bold, powerful portraits and remind yourself that ANYONE can break out of their shell during a shoot!
Although Coty looks young, this petite thing is almost 23 and ready to celebrate and love her body again. She called inquiring about a shoot and we talked about how boudoir can be a great way to feel empowered and gain your confidence back.
The day she came in for her shoot she brought a few clothes options, accessories, and was getting her hair and makeup done. I think a lot of us have been taught- pretty boudoir pictures = curls and pearls. Well. Not here.
She brought a few bralette and undie sets, overalls, a comfy sweater, and these great ripped, patched jeans. We decided to incorporate them all, just swapping out outer layers for a different vibe. We opted for a thick silver choker over pearls.
During hair and makeup she asked for it curled but Taylor, 1 of the hair and makeup artists we have here said- with these bags, are you sure you don’t want to pull off something a bit more edgy? And so she did. This is also why it's really awesome to work with us as your stylist, we can see things you in that maybe you haven't yet.
Instantly I knew this shoot was going to have some attitude and sass, plus with all of Coty’s energy we were all excited to get out to the big studio and start shooting.
We put on some music, some Britney Spears to be exact (bc Coty says it’s healthy to listen to Britney every once in a while) and just started having a girl's dance party, hair whipping, laughs filling the room. We started with the cozy, sweet bedroom look first and then progressed into this fashion icon. We finished with this in your face rockin little powerhouse. As you all know I scream when I get really excited, and I did a lot of screaming after looking at the back of my camera this day.
This is the BEST example I can give you to date to just LET IT ALL GO. I want you in my face, I want you going wild, I want you having fun, I need you to be FREE. You owe that to yourself. It’s beautiful, it’s strong, and it’s the new age of beauty, so get with it.

A Theraputic and Self Empowerment Photoshoot

This is more than Boudoir, this is Self Celebration

50 and fabulous photoshoot.jpg

For years I’ve used Photography as a way to express myself. If you've been following me through the years you'll know I got my photography start with Self Portraits. It’s honestly taught me so much about myself, especially in hard times, or in situations where I knew something was bothering me, but I didn’t actually understand it until I got it out of me and viewed it through the lens.
Photography has also helped me celebrate the best of times! On days where I just feel excited and have something to share, photography has allowed me to express myself in a simple, visual way that people can relate to. Yes, capturing moments, and trips, and holidays are great, but it’s the true Art or photography that I’m in love with.

No matter the reason the EXPERIENCE, the PROCESS of getting photographed often helped me MORE than the actual portrait itself, although, the final piece is that reminder I need to-

1- never go back to that state of mind
2- remember that moment, and revisit it more
   Along with
3- remember it's ok to share your experiences with others, like you all
4- I've created something that will outlive me.

That’s honestly the experience that I seek to give people. And sure, not everyone is as vulnerable, open, or as emotional as I am. Hell, some days I feel like just the biggest hot mess, and I think it’s because I’m actually too in touch with my emotions. Guess that’s the artist in me. And I know some of you just want a really fun, beautiful, feel good shoot, and I can give that to you a million times over, but don’t be surprised if it ends up showing you something more. And for those of you who are hoping to express yourself through a shoot- you are what my dreams are made of, and I thank you for being brave.

Jodi. I don’t care what you say- you are brave.

Jodi is 50 and it goes without saying she is damn fabulous. I applaud her for wanting to take the time out to celebrate herself, and her life, and who she is at this moment! That is NOT something that should be overlooked and we should celebrate ourselves more often, because we’ve worked really hard to get to this exact point in our lives!
Having Jodi in the studio was honestly a day that breathed life back into me as an artist. She was carefree, she was fun, she was bold, she was daring, she let go. Those are all the things that will make for a stunning experience. Those are the things I can’t MAKE you do, I can try, I try really, really hard, because it makes your portraits that much more unique, but I can never force you to fully LIVE during a shoot, and Jodi did just that for us.
The main thing I’ve learned so far in 2018- letting go of perfection. At one point we were literally chasing Jodi through the woods, RUNNING in the snow, around trees to catch up with her. We were screaming, and laughing, and it was an experience shooting I’ll never forget. I had NO idea what I was getting, but I knew what I was getting wasn’t made up, it wasn’t posed, it wasn’t forced. It was true.    Jodi booked this shoot to celebrate herself, she used it as therapy, but what she doesn’t know is, it was extremely therapeutic for me too. I aspire to be that fun, that young, that edgy, that brave when I am 50. And I plan on chasing more brave women, any age, through the woods, again and again!
Thank you for sharing your true self with us, Jodi.

My Animal Instincts.

Empowerment Project. Self expression

port huron michigan fall photoshoot.jpg

The serpent came up and whispered softly in my ear,
"Have you heard? They're out to control you, my dear."

No fruit sweet enough to make me give in,
So right then and there I created my own sin.
And they looked down and shuttered at the thought.
"This freedom, these animals! What will we do with this lot?"

Burn us, cage us, hell, even fucking hope rape us.
Bruises, cuts, thorns, lashes.
We don't need your hope when we have our passions.

They threw me off the boat, told me it was time to swim.
Oh, but what you don't know, is I know how to control the wind.
I can block out the storm or create my own.
Flood this land, but my heart is my home.

I feel my heart race under my breast, under it's cage.
I feel my teeth grind over where my tongue has been laid.
Kick my bare feet, grip with my hands
That urge to become your human I'll never understand.

I am a warrior, I am a wild animal.
I was born naked, I was born to fight battles.

Paint my body black with the soot of your damned.
I see you meant now they were the ones who could stand
on their own two feet,
up for what they believe.
The damned were those who were not shaped ever so easily.

But me, I wear this snake as a necklace.
Me, I'm not afraid to eat your sinful fruit for breakfast.

I apply my war paint with just one finger.
I ask you watch it carefully, as it's a signal

I don't fear your opinion of me.
Now call in your troops, I think you're going to need a bigger army.

I use Photography as a way to express myself and work through inner struggles. It's a way for me to process and let go of situations and emotions. I also hope they inspire others to let go and tell their own story in a powerful and artistic way.
