From Grunge to Whimsical- a Senior Session

   This day was a whirlwind of so many amazing things. Grungy buildings, walking on rooftops, amazing coffee, so many laughs, and snow!
   We started our adventure in an old building in Down Town Port Huron. The section we shot in is practically abandoned. And that’s what I love about it. My great grandma actually worked in that building when she was in her 20s… that’s how old and amazing this building is!
   We tore open the chipping windows and Aubrey crawled out on to the roof, her long, long blond hair whipping in the wind. I know being beautiful is done a little bit more effortlessly when you’re young, but Aubrey just honestly made it look totally effortless, and simple. And that’s how we started our session.
   Next we drove to the most adorable coffee shop ever- The Exquisite Corpse Coffeehouse. We grabbed 4 delicious coffees and refueled. While we were there we grabbed some shots and then noticed- it was snowing!
   We ran outside and captured Aubrey while little snowflakes danced in the sky. I know that sounds cheesy but it honestly was that magical. We had been hoping for snow and out of nowhere that day, we got it!
   After that we stopped by The Blue Water Bridge. Normally I’m not a huge fan of super obvious landmarks, but if we can take all of it’s unique qualities and use those, instead of what everyone else focuses on, I’m happy. And the huge rocks and weathered dock was just what we needed. Again , our Senior rocked it!
   Lastly we came back to the studio and the snow had piled up. It was covering the trees, it was thick on the ground, and then Aubrey came out in her dress. A floor length, blush pink, sequin dress. And an instant fairytale was born. She is in love with the movie Frozen, and we wanted to take a little inspiration from that, but I feel like she honestly did one better.
  So myself, Taylor, Aubrey and her mom Amy (who is just as beautiful and awesome) all ventured out in to the woods together to finish up the session. I had to force myself to stop shooting. Everything was perfect, and it easily could have went on for hours.

Whimsical, Winter, and Wind.
Who needs snow when you have love,

Beautiful Maternity Session showing the love these two share- check!
Outdoors and incorporate that rustic feel they both are drawn to- check!
Snow- ugh. Darn it, Michigan. Fail.

   February in Michigan and it’s 40 degrees out! Not what we expected, not what we planned for, but we made the best of it and still came away with breathtaking images that held that winter feeling.

   We showed up to our location and it was a mud pit! But I knew the hidden beauty it had to offer so we suffered though it. We drug our gear and props out of my jeep and Bridget helped Careena through the rough terrain. We swapped big comfy boots out for heels at the last minute and then we started shooting.
   The wind only appeared to be a pin in between shots. When it caught Careena’s hair just right, and flung that beautiful dress around, it was totally worth it. The frozen pond mimicked an icy wonderland even without the snow, and the trees far off in the background are almost reminiscent of mountains. Winter was with us, just in a different way.
We changed outfits and headed deeper in to the woods. I totally believe fairytales come to life there, and this example doesn’t prove me wrong.
   I loved watching Bridget take care of Careena. Helping her balance, guiding her to walk in her heals, brushing the hair out of her face, and cuddling up behind her with a grip that showed she was there to make everything easy and ok.
   Careena was a beauty to watch. Her smile was genuine, her eyes told you what words weren’t spoken, and when she had the opportunity to get a few shots of just her alone and the baby bump, and new woman came out. Strong and fierce.

The Beauty and Magic of The Baby Bump

   4 years ago I did a shoot at Paul Mitchell Great Lakes. There was an extremely talented young woman there who had brought her sister in to model her hair cut and color. It was one of my favorites I had captured all day.
   Less than a year later we got to work with each other again. She was entering a contest and had me photograph two more models for her, showing off her talented and unique work.
   And now here we are. Creating beauty together again like you wouldn’t believe!
   Now a proud mama of a beautiful baby girl, Larisha sent me a message a few months back asking about a maternity session for her and her boyfriend, and showed me some examples of what she liked.
   Dark, moody, raw.
   If that doesn't’ just explain everything I love.
   It’s amazing what you can do with two people, 1 backdrop, the right lighting, and a vision.
   The way I see it- this is Fine Art. This is Beauty, elevated. This is real life, made to look as magical as it feels.

Vintage Pin-Up with Retro Truck

Mom goes pin up- A gorgeous girl and a rusty old truck

a journey of going from being a
young woman, to a mom, and back again!

   I met Melissa about 3 years ago. Her friend had a pin up party (girls night!) and she booked a spot. There’s a shot of her laying laying down, hair fanned out, corset fitting perfectly, and it still stands as one of my favorite pin up shots I’ve ever done, to date. Her expression just screamed true pin up, which to me is sass and confidence.
   Thinking about who she is now… the fact that in person she is so genuinely sweet and happy… well… again, true pin up.    About a year or so after that we came back together again to do a maternity shoot. A very, very last minute maternity shoot. We’re talking days before her daughter was expected to be here! But we made it and those were amazing as well.    I was ecstatic to find out my perfect little pin up was coming back to me again this year for another shoot!! By this time her goal of dropping the baby weight had happened and she looked phenomenal.
   The first part of her session undoubtedly reminds me of Gilligan’s Island Mary Ann. Just that perfect, innocent, fun beautiful girl. This wasn’t done on purpose, and I think it’s mostly the outfit and the hair, but…
   When Melissa showed me what she had put together for the second part of our session I almost died! Polka dots and stockings. Oh my gosh. And buttons down the skirt… I just love it! This part was so much fun! As much as this was a wonderful way for her to put a mile marker on this time in her life and her progression of going from a petite young woman, to pregnant, to a mom, and back again… I heard her hubby was pretty happy with everything too!
