Shedding Layers | A new Season for AJBC

Every artist reaches a point in their career where they feel like they finally understand themselves.I say artist, and not photographer, bc I was not born a photographer. I did no start this company bc I liked all the buttons on my camera. I didn't start AJBC bc I  loved putting up backdrops.

I truly believe I was born an artist. A maker of things. A collector of memories. A traveler. An explorer. An Imaginative.

I started photographing bc I loved creating. It just so happens that the first thing I understood about myslef as an artist is that my main medium would be photography. Many of you ask why I am AJBC. Well, bc, that's literally who I am. It's my initials. Before I was married I would paint, do pottery, draw, and I would sign everything AJB. When I got married I felt bad dropping the B, everyone knew my art name as AJB, so I just added the C for Carufel, making me AJBC.

For those of you who knew me before AJBC was "official" I did a 365. It was fun, it was care free, it was edgy. I did things that not everyone liked, I portrayed things in my photographs that I would never really do- and I LOVED IT. And I've been told by a lot of people that they loved it too. A LOT of people started booking with me bc of my self portrait 365 project. Somewhere in there I got shy. I got worried about what people thought. I thought I had to give them what they wanted, when in reality, people came to me in the beginning bc I was just doing what was me, what I loved, and that was being an artist.

Now that I've been AJBC in the photography world I've photographed almost everything you can think of. Newborns, babies, weddings, events, pets, couples, seniors, families and the list goes on and on. I use to think it was cool that I could do it all. Then I realized- I don't like doing it all- and that's ok!

As 2014 grows I notice myself really, really finding a path, and staying on it. It's a path less traveled, and I like that. It's a path that many may find uncomfortable and turn around, it's a skinny path that may not allow room for everyone. But if you're daring enough to walk with me on this path, what you will see is everything those people who turned around didn't, you'll see a beautiful view at the end that you worked so hard to see.

So what am I saying? I know I talk a lot. I type a lot. But what am I really saying? I guess I'm saying everything that I said before, about how we are taking things up a notch, except I really mean it this time. Things are about to get real. And for the first time in my career, I'm not doing it for anyone except myself. I know that sounds selfish, and I'll be honest, it mildly is, but as an artist, I can ONLY produce my BEST work for YOU, if I'm doing what I love.

Everything in between is just... everything in between. And I'm not cool with just being in between everything.

SO. As of TODAY I'm shedding my layers. It's a new season for me.

AJBCPhotography_PortHuron_MI_creative_portrait Welcome. Enjoy. Walk with me.

Don't turn around on me. I promise the view is worth it.

Being You | Stylized Boudoir Session

I can't believe I had forgotten to share this beautiful, amazing woman with you!!This is my AMAZING stylist, Jen. She's the talent behind many of my images. I love having someone I can 100% trust for my clients. It's always so exciting when a beautiful woman walks through my door and I know they are going to shine even brighter after they are done getting their hair and makeup done with Jen. I also have trusted her for the last 10 years with all of my own persona haircuts, from first seeing her and asking her to help me grow out a disaster, to 10 years later asking her what she thought about shaving half my head and her smiling saying- I think you can pull it off. She has a way of taking what you want- and making it better. It was so fun to see her on the other side of this experience!! We had a wonderful time, right in her own home, creating something soft and natural for her indoors, to then moving outside and doing something FUN and sassy- I love versatile girls with no fear ;)

If you're still in biker babe mode you need to check out Roberta's biker inspired session- a fitness bad ass who you can find online at Fit Biker Chick!

The Girl with the Apple

The Girl with the Apple

As I sit here and plan for a really awesome, super stylized session in the snow this weekend, I think back to last year when the snow started to thaw- I made a BIG change in my company.  I booked a few shoots and opened my mind. I feel like THIS session was the first time I had REALLY felt alive while I was shooting in a very, very long time. Many, many people have brought up, and still bring up, this session to me, saying, "...the little girl with the apple..." Who would have thought a gorgeous little girl and 1 red apple would start something so big and stick in so many people's minds when it came to AJBC! That makes me so so happy. I wanted to revisit some of my fav shots of that session with you!(Plus give a special thank you to her and her mom for 100% trusting me and the vision I had created for them... along with being amazing and finding an all white wardrobe in the middle of winter!)

Dress Up for the Grown Ups

Boudoir. What a fancy word. It sounds classier than just saying bedroom. It almost gives it a sense of beauty, a sense of whimsical privacy.

To many women as of late it means- I want to wear lingerie and get photographed for my special someone. But to a photographer, it shouldn't mean that. For me, it meant- I want to put on next to nothing and have you photograph me for a long time. When I first started out I just didn't "get it." Not being an overly sexy person myself, I wasn't interested in it. I had some requests for it but never got overly excited about it, and there for, that's probably why I never shot any sessions. Then... I started to get in to pin up photography. It was a FUN version of boudoir for me! But as I photographed more and more pin ups I realized something. It wasn't about the hair, it wasn't about the clothes. It was about 1 thing.

Feeling beautiful.

It was also about being confident, and loving who you are and loving someone else enough to share that.

And slowly, I started to really, really fall in love with Boudoir photography.

First off, what girl doesn't like to get pampered?A morning where you don't have to stress about getting your foundation on right, you don't have to figure out how on earth those models get their hair to look so dang perfect. You just sit back and when you're done- you find yourself looking like you stepped out of a magazine. You feel like you have it going on, because you do! Then you get to go to a studio where you play with shoes, jewelry, lace, pearls, sparkles. I don't care how old you are- playing dress up is FUN! You get to transform. EVERY DAY you walk around in what you probably feel is something that doesn't scream- LOOK AT ME, I'm FABULOUS! (Hey- if you do- you go girl!) But THIS, this is totally a time to do that!! And when it's all said and done, you get that moment that you get to keep forever to look back on in your images! You get to carry that moment out.

THAT'S the part I love.

I get to to help you dig deep and be confident enough to do something daring- because why not- it's just us in the studio!

It's YOUR time. I LOVE THAT!

But the best, best, best part is when you get to see your images for the first time and you literally SCREAM in my studio bc you can't believe what you've been missing out on, inside you, this whole time!
